STEREOPHONICS - MAKE ‘EM LAUGH, MAKE ‘EM CRY, MAKE ‘EM WAIT

Stereophonics' thirteenth studio album, Make 'Em Laugh, Make 'Em Cry, Make 'Em Wait, released on April 25, 2025, marks a compelling evolution in the band's storied career. Comprising eight meticulously crafted tracks, the album showcases a refined sound that balances emotional depth with musical precision.

Following the experimental ‘Ooycha!’ in 2022, Stereophonics has managed to keep their signature original sound, whilst also evolving and adding a few new twists to the mix.

The lead single, ‘There's Always Gonna Be Something,’ sets the tone with its choral guitars and suspended bass lines, creating a haunting backdrop for Kelly Jones' introspective lyrics. Lines like "The bayonet tongue of silence, whispering just to remind us" reveal a poetic maturity, reflecting themes of uncertainty and acceptance.

The album's title and aesthetic draw inspiration from Louise Bourgeois' artwork ART IS A GUARANTY OF SANITY.Jones was captivated by the simplicity and emotional resonance of the piece, leading to the album's minimalist pink cover. This artistic influence permeates the album, infusing it with a sense of vulnerability and authenticity.

Each track on the album offers a distinct narrative with, ‘Make It On Your Own’ opening the album with a message of self-reliance and resilience. Kelly Jones' vocals carry a raw honesty, a characteristic that has been a hallmark of the band's work, particularly evident in their previous album Kind . This track continues that tradition, offering listeners a candid reflection on the challenges and triumphs of forging one's path.

‘Seems Like You Don’t Know Me’ delves into themes of identity and misunderstanding, featuring intricate guitar work, with the song exemplifying Stereophonics' willingness to experiment and evolve, offering listeners a fresh perspective while maintaining the emotive storytelling that has defined their career.

Other standout tracks include ‘Colours Of October,’ a poignant reflection on change and nostalgia. ‘Eyes Too Big For My Belly’ offers a raw, acoustic-driven narrative whilst staying true to old Stereophonics sound, while ‘Mary Is A Singer’ pays homage to the power of music as a form of expression with a country twist. With ‘Backroom Boys’ bringing nostalgia, memories and ‘Feeling Of Falling We Crave’ round out the album, each contributing to its cohesive exploration of human emotion and experience.

Recorded in London, the album is described as "devoid of any fat or filler," presenting a concise and impactful listening experience.  This focused approach allows each song to stand out, highlighting the band's ability to evolve while maintaining their core sound.

In support of the album, Stereophonics have embarked on their Stadium Anthems tour, with performances across the UK and Ireland, including notable dates at Cardiff's Principality Stadium.  This tour not only celebrates their new material but also reinforces their status as one of Britain's enduring rock acts.

Make 'Em Laugh, Make 'Em Cry, Make 'Em Wait is a testament to Stereophonics' continued relevance and artistic growth. It invites listeners on a journey through introspection, societal commentary, and emotional resonance, solidifying the band's legacy in the contemporary music landscape.
